For many of us, investing is the toughest part of Faithful Stewardship. It can be confusing, and it can be intimidating.
Confusing because of the unique language used by investors, such as bull markets, bear markets, asset allocation, exchange-traded funds, 401k’s, 403b’s, IRA’s, Traditional, Roth, etc. What does it all mean?
Intimidating because of how quickly—and how far—the stock market can fall and lose value.
It is important for you to grow in your understanding, faithfulness, and effectiveness in this area of investing because of its potential impact on faithful stewardship.
This fourteen (14) page digital guide addresses the basic concepts of investing with simplicity, and provides practical guidance with digital links to helpful resources.
It is not a complex or difficult task to know with certainty the condition of your finances.
It just requires your focused time and attention on two types of financial activities:
1. INCOME (What is coming in?) 2. EXPENSES (What is going out?)
Projecting and planning your future income and expenses is called a BUDGET.
Tracking and reporting on your past income and expenses is referred to as an INCOME STATEMENT.
Both are helpful tools for knowing the condition of your finances. (Proverbs 23:27)
This calculator will assist you in the healthy discipline of tracking your current net worth.
Many have found this simple yearly exercise a tool that has helped them on their faithful stewardship journey.
It should take you less than 15 minutes to complete.
This simple net worth health calculator helps you evaluate this question: "How healthy is your current net worth?"
It takes the inputs of your variables including: your ASSETS (what you own) MINUS (-) your LIABILITIES (what you owe) and then it considers the input variables of your current age and income. Then, it uses a formula described in the best selling book, "The Millionaire Next Door” and gives you a clear picture of the relative health of your current net worth.
This calculator helps you to evaluate the health of your current retirement savings by allowing you to input your current retirement savings.
Then you can "stress-test your current retirement savings plan" by inputting your variables of: planned annual additional savings, estimated investment returns, estimated average inflation rate, your planned annual retirement withdrawal rate, and how many years you anticipate you have before retirement.
The calculator will tell you how much your retirement savings will provide you in today's dollars and the number of years your retirement savings will last based on the variables you input into the worksheet/calculator.
This worksheet helps to illustrate the compounding power of saving and investing diligently over time. By viewing this worksheet you will be able to see and understand the importance and power of this statement: "The best time to start saving and investing diligently was yesterday. And, the next best time is today." Take note of "How much $1 is worth if saved and invested to age 65" column. You will also see how much money you need to save monthly and annually today at your age to end up with $1 million or $2 million by age 65.
Albert Einstein said, "Compound Interest is the 8th wonder of the world. The one who understands it, earns it. Those who fail to understand it, pay it."
To illustrate the importance of "Starting Early" this worksheet does a sample comparison of Ben and Tim. Ben starts investing $2,000 a year at age 19, then stops at age 27. Tim starts investing $2,000 a year at age 27 and stops at 65.
Who did better at age 65 assuming they both average 10% returns?
See worksheet for answer.
This worksheet illustrates the returns and time required to recover from a market loss. Historically markets recover but they take time. This is why diversification of investments is wise, and why investors must take the long-term view.
This calculator will help you plan your faithful stewardship priorities of:
Giving Generously - 1st Saving Generously - 2nd Spending Wisely - 3rd.
You simply enter your income and adjust the Give, Save, Spend percentages to your priority preferences. The calculator will then give you the exact amounts to match your priorities.
