Week 5: Financial Stability

Jeff Griffin

Ecclesiastes 5:10-19

A Harvard study shows that financial stability is a major contributor to a human’s well-being, but what does the Bible say? This weekend, we’re taking a closer look at God’s plan for helping us to manage our money according to His wisdom, not merely our own.

Kicking It Off:

What’s one of your favorite odd or unique things that someone might suggest you should replace or buy new? (Alternatively, if you love to purge things you no longer use, what’s the most recent item you were excited to toss?)

 Discussion:

1.     Jeff shared that at times, money can be maddening, dangerous, and vanishing. Why might you agree with this idea? How has money frustrated you (or someone close to you) in the past?

“Those who love money will never have enough.” ~ Ecclesiastes 5:10a (NLT)

 2.     What’s the difference between savings and hoarding? Which one can sometimes lead to idolatry? Which one’s encouraged, according to Scripture? And where does your natural tendency fall?

 3.     In this week’s message, Jeff reminds us there are three options for using money: A) Spend it. B) Give it. C) Leave it. How can we draw on God’s wisdom to know what to do?

“Better to have little, with fear for the Lord, than to have great treasure and inner turmoil.”  ~Proverbs 15:16-17 (NLT)

 4.     When it comes to enjoying simple things, it’s important to acknowledge that every blessing comes from God. Sounds easy enough, yes? So what keeps us from doing that more consistently?

“When God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil — this is a gift of God.” ~ Ecclesiastes 5:19 (NIV)

 5.     God can enable us to limit our spending and accept the portion in life we’ve been given. What are some challenges that we face when trying to live within our means and to budget properly?

6.     Another aspect of financial stability is to see how God designed humanity to do noble work, and to recognize He calls us to enjoy serving those we work alongside. Whether that’s working at home, at school, or on the job, where could you use some more encouragement? How can your group pray for you?

 Wrapping Up:

Financial stewardship isn’t always easy, but God’s Word makes it clear that it’s necessary. Ask the Lord for His guidance to help each group member yield to His will and make honoring these principles a regular part of your routine.
