Week 4: Tipping Point

Jeff Griffin

2 Kings 19:35-36

When life is harder than we expect, God’s Word equips us to stand strong. The beautiful thing is that when we’ve stood strong, He comes to our rescue, as we learn this week.

Kicking It Off:

Would You Rather: Winter Version: Would you rather shovel your entire driveway with a small spoon or deal with a dead car battery every single morning for two weeks straight?

Discussion:

1.     How good are you at asking for help in the face of hardship? Do you try to bootstrap your way through or are you willing to lean on others? How might this tendency be helping or hindering your reliance on God?

2.     Read 2 Kings 19:32-36. Through the prophet Isaiah, what does the Lord declare will happen to the Assyrian siege on Jerusalem (v. 32-34)? And then what does happen (v. 35-36)?

3.     From a cursory reading, it seems “just like that” Hezekiah and his people were miraculously saved by God. But review what we’ve learned in previous weeks of this series. What have the residents of Jerusalem already been through (2 Kings 18:13-19:17)? How would they have been feeling up until the moment the remaining Assyrians marched away?

4.     Read Psalm 34:17. Jeff noted that God is committed to always rescue, but He might not do so in the way we expect. Have you ever had a time when you felt like God let you down? How were you expecting Him to show up in that situation? Looking back, can you identify what He did instead?

“The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.”     ~ Psalm 34:17 (NIV)

5.     Expectations can cloud our perception. And they can cause us to miss what’s happening under our noses. Are you facing a challenge right now where you need God’s rescue? What can you do in the coming days/weeks to be alert for how God is working to help? Or how can you be preparing yourself for the next time you face hardship?

Wrapping Up:

As Jeff said, God’s specialty is rescuing. Pray that this truth would sink deep into the hearts of your group members, that they can draw on that promise during hard times.

“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.” ~ Isaiah 55:8 (NLT)
