Week 5: Study

Jeff Griffin

Proverbs 2:1-5

It’s amazing to think that God Himself, in order to connect with each one of us, penned a book to the whole world. That result? The Bible, the best-selling book of all time, which is full of treasure and the power to change lives. This week, we’re focused on how to use the tools available to search for treasured truth found in God’s Word.

Kicking It Off:

If you could have any tool to help you find buried treasure, which tool would you choose?

Discussion:

1.     Think about your earliest impressions of the Bible, even as a child. Did you grow up believing that God’s Word was a source of treasure, a good book with moral stories, or more like a work of fiction and fables? How has that perspective impacted your beliefs as an adult?

2.     Our anchor passage for this week is Proverbs 2:1-5, written by King Solomon. What stands out to you from these verses after hearing Jeff’s message?

“My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding—indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.” (NIV)

3.     At times, the Bible can be confusing, so Jeff encourages us to PRAY as we start. What are some potential rewards to starting in prayer? What keeps you from doing that consistently?

“Open my eyes to see wonderful things in your Word.” (Psalm 119:18, TLB)

4.     Brainstorm some practical steps we can take to help us better UNDERSTAND the Bible. How might frequent Scripture reading help us glean insights as we regularly delve into God’s Word?

5.     As we SEARCH God’s treasure troves, it might prompt us to ask: Do I long for kudos from other people or from God? What makes us all prone to seeking human praise? What can we do to counter the lie that other people’s opinions determine our worth and value?

6.     Jeff stated, “WORSHIP is celebrating who God is.” Discuss how that looks in everyday life?

7.     What does it mean to store up God’s commands? What are some real benefits when we MEMORIZE Scripture and take it with us throughout our day?

“Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.” (Deuteronomy 11:18, NIV)
