Week 4: Authority

Jeff Griffin

2 Timothy 4:1-4

It’s amazing to think that God Himself, in order to connect with each one of us, penned a book to the whole world. That result? The Bible, the best-selling book of all time. Yet it’s not just a book to read and then sit on a shelf. This week we’re learning about how the Bible should be an authority in our life.

Kicking It Off:

If your phone could have only one app on it, which one would you choose and why?

Discussion:

1.     What resources do you use to start your day? Do you open a weather app to choose your wardrobe? A cookbook for meal ideas? The newspaper? What are your regular go-to’s?

2.     Jeff’s message focused on three areas of drifting that the Bible can counter. The first of those is DOCTRINE: knowing the truth about God Himself. What are some ways you tend to misunderstand who God is or misrepresent Him in your mind? From what we’ve heard/discussed already in this series, what can we learn about God from Scripture? Why is it so important to keep going back to the Bible to understand God?

3.     Read Romans 12:2. What does this say about human tendency regarding our thoughts, habits, and behaviors (our MORALITY)? According to this passage how do we solve that tendency? What result does it promise us?

Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:2, NIV)

4.     Now look at Hebrews 6:17-20. For context, Hebrews 6:13-14 talks about God’s promise to Abraham, but he goes on to say God’s oath was made also for those in the future – for us: “we who have fled.” Jeff talked about the Bible as authority regarding SALVATION. How might God’s promises that were fulfilled in scripture act as “an anchor for the soul” and encourage us not to drift from our dependence on Christ as our Savior? Which promises resonate most with you?

“God did this so that…we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” (Heb. 6:18-19, NIV)

5.     Out of the three areas Jeff noted, where do you most tend to drift? How will you use time in God’s word to counter that this week?

Wrapping Up:

Without the Bible as an anchor, our tendency is to drift from God, His Truth, and His Mission. Hebrews 2:1 states it succinctly: “Therefore we must pay closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.” (NET). Pray for the Holy Spirit to draw our attention to God’s Word.
