Week 2: Overview

Jeff Griffin

Luke 24:13-32

It’s amazing to think that God Himself, in order to connect with each one of us, penned a book to the whole world. That result? The Bible, the best-selling book of all time. And yet for many of us, Scripture might feel sort of cumbersome and confusing, until we see the bigger picture. This week, we’re studying the unifying theme of the Bible: God’s kingdom. It’s all to help us better understand its priority and impact in our lives.

Kicking It Off:

Imagine if you were a professional baseball player. Which song would you choose to play in the stadium as your “walk-up song” when you go up to bat?

Discussion:

1.     Jeff described several different aspects of Scripture that might seem like a complex jumble when taken out of context. (Various authors, locations, time periods, genres, etc.) Which aspects of the Bible tend to seem the most unusual or peculiar to you? Which aspects increase your confidence?

2.     How would you describe the kingdom of God in the very beginning? What surprises you about God’s initial intent for humanity to have community and make the world a better place? How might that apply to us today?

“God created human beings in his own image: male and female he created them. He blessed them and said, ‘Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over all the animals.’(Genesis 1:27-28, NLT)

3.     Jeff described how some parts of Scripture showcase where people got it right and lived according to God’s Ways. And yet that wasn’t always the case. What can we learn from the example of those who were exiled into Babylon? (Also see Jeremiah 32:36-38.)

4.     Naturally, Jesus revealed the heart of God when He came to earth. How does Jesus’ example to love your enemy, forgive others, and serve the least of these inspire you? If you’re honest, what holds you back from fully embracing these directions?

“Anyone wanting to be a leader among you must be your servant. And if you want to be right at the top, you must serve like a slave.” (Matthew 20:26-27, TLB)

5.     God’s dwelling place in Heaven is the greatest evidence of building His kingdom for all eternity. How does that truth encourage you to keep sharing this life-transforming story with others?

Wrapping Up:

What’s one thing you can do differently as you study God’s Word this week, as a result of this series on The Writings? Pray that each of your group members is filled with excitement to live for the ultimate destiny of building God’s kingdom in Heaven.
