Week 1: Priority

Jeff Griffin

Psalm 19:7-11

Have you ever considered that God Himself, in order to connect with you, penned a book to the whole world? The result? The Bible, the ultimate best-selling book of all time. This book is filled with stories and wisdom that can be life transforming. We kick off this series considering what makes the Bible so important that it needs to be a priority in our lives.

Kicking It Off:

What is the last really good book you read (in print or audiobook) or podcast you listened to? What about it left an impression on you?

Discussion:

1.     Read all of Psalm 19. If you had to break it up into sections where would you divide it? What would you say is the theme of each section?

2.     Who or what is speaking in verses 1-4? Read Genesis 1:1-2 and 6-8. By what means did God create the skies spoken of in Psalm 19? Think again about Psalm 19:1-4 in light of this: what might this say about God’s desire to communicate with us and the priority to Him of His Word? David gives us the specific example of the sun in verses 4-6, describing its regularity. How might that illustrate the frequency with which God wants to connect with us?

3.     Verses 7-9 show us how God’s word in the Bible surpasses His revelation through the natural world. In his sermon Jeff talks about the Four Benefits of God’s Word: Refreshment, Wisdom, Joy, & Light. Which of these do you experience most often during or after reading the Bible? Which do you want to press into the Bible to experience more, or which are you in most need of right now?

4.     Reread verses 12-14. What does David (the author) realize after considering the benefits and value of God’s Word? What is his attitude toward his own words and thoughts (v. 14)?

5.     Reviewing all we’ve learned from the sermon and this discussion, how much of a priority does God place on His Word? How much of a priority has the Bible been to you in the past? What changes, if any, will you make to in your approach to the Bible going forward?

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word

that comes from the mouth of God.’” (Matthew 4:4, NIV)

Wrapping Up

God has been speaking to us from the very beginning of time, it’s up to us to stop and listen to Him. Pray for God to remove the hindrances to each of us making Bible reading a daily habit.
