Week 6: Rahab - Marveling at Grace

Jeff Griffin

Hebrews 11:30-31

A Hall of Fame celebrates heroes who inspire greatness. The Bible even has its own Hall of Fame, found in Hebrews chapter 11. In our study of these great heroes and heroines of faith, we’re learning how spiritual champions of old still inspire believers today. This week is Rahab, whose faith led her to survive the downfall of an evil community all around her.

Kicking It Off:

Suppose you could be a spy for a day. What’s one top-secret tool or gadget that you’d like to have with you at all times?

Discussion:

1.     Who was Rahab? What were some key facts Jeff identified about Rahab from this message? (For review, your group might want to take a quick glance at Joshua chapter 2.)

2.     What was the city of Jericho known for? And yet what had Rahab heard about the God of Israel in bringing miracles? How does it make you feel knowing that God communicates with people who are seemingly far from Him?

“We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did … When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below.” (Joshua 2:10-11, NIV)

3.     How did Rahab and her family protect the spies, and what led to their safe escape? Where has God called you to take a risk for your faith?

4.     Rahab herself was a prostitute, part of a depraved city filled with all kinds of sinful people in a corrupt, pagan culture. So what does it say about Rahab’s faith and spiritual sensitivity, that her life was spared when Jericho was attacked and destroyed?

“By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.” (Hebrews 11:31, NIV)

5.     We know that Rahab became part of the family lineage of King David and even Jesus Himself, which demonstrates that once we come to faith, our pasts no longer matter. How does that bring you hope that God’s grace can take someone with a rather checkered past, and still redeem them for His glory?

Wrapping Up:

In Rahab’s story, we learn about God’s amazing grace that can save even the worst of sinners and bring them into an abundant life in Christ Jesus. Pray that Rahab’s adventure will inspire you to keep sharing your faith and apply her story to your life this week.
