Week 2: Enoch - Walking Closely with God
Jeff Griffin
Hebrews 11:5-6
From music stars to sports legends, a Hall of Fame celebrates heroes who inspire greatness. And the Bible even has its own Hall of Fame. In our study of Hebrews 11, we’re talking all about how the spiritual champions of old can inspire our faith today. This week we’re focused on Enoch, an ordinary man known for his extraordinary walk with the Lord.
Let’s say you were to “disappear” for a while to go away on a dream vacation. Where would you go? What’s on your bucket list?
1. According to Hebrews 11:5, what is Enoch mostly known for having happen to him? What else did you discover about Enoch from this message?
“By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: ‘He could not be found, because God had taken him away.’ For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God.” (NIV)
2. Jeff shared how the Old Testament is like the “answer key” to learning about some of the main players in the New Testament. How might that help you appreciate it more?
3. Compared to others in the Hall of Fame, Enoch’s accomplishments might not seem all that amazing. So what’s so special about “walking with God” on a regular basis?
“After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked with God …” (Genesis 5:22a, NET)
4. What do you think having a dialogue with God means? On a practical level, how can we make that happen?
“The Lord tells his secrets to those who respect him; he tells them about his agreement.” (Psalm 25:14, NCV)
5. What do you think is the connection between a strong faith and pleasing God? How does being deliberate or intentional in our walk actually play out in real life?
“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” (Hebrews 11:6, NIV)
6. Of these five categories, which one resonates the most? Why? Which challenges you the most?
Dialogue. Dust. Direction. Deliberate. Delight.
Much of what Enoch is remembered for is a mystery. Yet instead of simply guessing what happened, let’s pray we can follow Enoch’s example by becoming men and women who walk faithfully with God for a long, long time — and seek to please Him with our lives.
