Week 5: The Product of Prayer

Jeff Griffin

Exodus 34:29-35

The final week of this series was a study of the results of a life of prayer. We discovered that after Moses encountered God on Mount Sinai, he came back with his face radiating the glory of God. We too will be transformed to be more like Jesus when we are committed to prayer.

Kicking it off:

How are you planning on celebrating Thanksgiving?

Discussion:

1. Reread Exodus 33:18 (NIV): “Moses said, ‘Show me your glory.’”

Why is this simple prayer of profound significance?

2. Reread Exodus 34:6 (NIV): “God passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, ‘The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness!’”

This statement of the Lord is called the “Divine Attribute Formula.” What do you love about this description of God’s character?

3. Reread Exodus 34:29 (NLT): “When Moses came down Mount Sinai carrying the two stone tablets, he wasn’t aware that his face had become radiant because he had spoken with the Lord.”

How does meeting with God in prayer make us more like Jesus?

4. Reread 2 Corinthians 3:18 (NIV): "All who contemplate the Lord's glory are being transformed into his image."

How can we “contemplate the Lord’s glory”?

5. Read the following quote of N.T. Wright: “Those who worship money increasingly treat other people as creditors, debtors, partners, or customers rather than as human beings. Those who worship sex treat other people as actual or potential sex objects. Those who worship power treat other people as either collaborators, competitors, or pawns. When people give their heartfelt allegiance to that which is not God, they progressively cease to reflect the image of God. One of the primary laws of life is that you become like what you worship.”

How are you inclined to personally apply the truth in this quote?

6. Can you think of someone who has been transformed by their prayer life? If so, tell the group about them.

7. Are there any ways you are attempting to grow in prayer these days? If so, tell the group.

Wrapping It Up:

Ask God to show his glory to each group member in increased measure in the days ahead.
