Week 2: The Power in Prayer
Jeff Griffin
Exodus 17:8-13
Do you ever feel like your prayers are just bouncing off the ceiling? Moses can help. In our new series, this Old Testament hero will help rejuvenate your prayer life. This weekend, we’re learning how to enjoy a life-giving pursuit with God through prayer.
In light of Jeff’s intro on the heartache of war, what’s one of the scariest things you’ve ever done?
1. By way of review, what happened during the Battle of the Amalekites and Israelites? And how was it connected to the power of prayer?
“The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. Moses said to Joshua, ‘Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.’” (Exodus 17:8-9, NIV)
2. Prayer can be simply defined by “having a conversation with God,” and it also can entail making requests to God, known as supplication or intervention. How do you feel about asking God for things in your life? Does it feel like a struggle, or does it tend to come more naturally?
3. Describe some reasons why it can be easy to lean on our own strength instead of the Lord’s. By contrast, what makes dependence on God so important?
4. How does Matthew 6:8 give you comfort? In what ways does this verse challenge you?
“…for your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!” (NLT)
5. What’s your definition of corporate prayer? What are some potential benefits to sharing prayer requests within a group? What are some scary or intimidating factors?
6. Picture Moses praying fervently as his brother Aaron and friend Hur helped to hold him up. How might our world look different today if every believer stood alongside one another with a holy conviction to pray when we “go into battle” in life? What might our church, family, workplace, schools, and communities be like if we lived like we’re constantly dependent on the Lord?
“When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.
Commit to praying for one another as a group and ask God to grow your dependence on Him in the process.
