Pursuing God Through Prayer

Week 1: The Privilege of Prayer

Jeff Griffin

Exodus 3:1-14

This week we kicked off a new series on prayer from the life of Moses. In our text, we studied Moses’ encounter with God at the burning bush. Talking with God transformed Moses’ life, and prayer can do the same for us.

Kicking it off:

God revealed himself to Moses through fire. Many of us love a good crackling fire! Do you prefer your fire to be of logs or gas? What do you like about fire?

Discussion:

1. Reread Deuteronomy 34:10 (TLB): There has never been another prophet like Moses, for the Lord talked to him face to face.

Why is Moses’ friendship with God celebrated more than his powerful leadership gifts?

2. Reread Exodus 3:1-2 (NLT): One day Moses was tending the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian. He led the flock far into the wilderness and came to Sinai, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the middle of a bush.

Why do you think God revealed himself to Moses in this unique way?

3. Reread Exodus 3:4 (NLT): God called to Moses from the middle of the bush, “Moses! Moses!”

What did this moment teach Moses about God and about prayer?

4. When you pray, where do you imagine God is located as he receives your prayer?

5. Reread Exodus 3:5 (NLT): God said to Moses, “Take off your sandals, for you are standing on holy ground.”

When we pray, how can we satisfy God’s desire (from this verse) without removing our shoes?

6. What do you pray about most?

7. What is you biggest challenge in prayer?

8. Reread Exodus 3:10-12 (NLT): God said, “I am sending you to Pharaoh. You must lead my people Israel out of Egypt.” But Moses protested to God, “Who am I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt?” God answered, “I will be with you.”

How does this passage fit with the often-quoted motto, “God never gives us more than we can handle”?

Wrapping It Up:

Prayer studied is not as important as prayer done. So, recognize God’s presence by talking to him together.
