Week 1: What Started Everything?

Jeff Griffin

Genesis 1:1-25

The first verse of the Bible says that God made the universe. How can we know this is true? This week we learned of an apologetic evidence for the existence of God that is called, “The Cosmological Argument.”

Kicking It Off:

How excited are you about the start of the NFL season? Why do you feel that way?

Discussion:

1.    Reread Genesis 1:1 (NIV) In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

How does this verse relate to the Big Bang Theory?

2.    Why are many scientists also atheists?

3.    Are there reasons that you believe God is real?

4.    Jeff explained that the Cosmological Argument gives us powerful grounds for believing in the existence of an Eternal, Uncaused, Transcendent, Timeless, Spaceless, Changeless, Immaterial, Powerful, Volitional, Artistic, Loving creator of the universe. Can you remember the rational for the logical necessity of any of these attributes of the universe’s cause?

5.    Read Hebrews 11:3 (NLT) By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at God’s command, that what we now see did not come from anything that can be seen.

We believe that God created the universe. Is this belief based on faith or reason? Explain.

6.    How could you help someone who is doubting God’s existence?

Wrapping It Up:

Ask the Lord to bless you with rock solid confidence in His reality, presence, and love.
