Leaving the Harbor

Week 4: Reach Your Neighbor
Jeff Griffin
2 Kings 5:1-19
God calls His followers to leave the security of the harbor and follow Him on a high seas voyage into the unknown. For a successful journey, there are certain skills we must master as we learn the ropes. This week, we’re studying a little girl who becomes a hero of faith when she introduces her leader to God — and her example to help us reach our neighbors.
In honor of Jeff teaching how lighthouses of old served as navigation guides, what’s your tool of choice when you’re driving or traveling? (For example … Apple Maps? Waze? Rand McNally? GPS? Google maps? Yahoo?)
1. Read Isaiah 49:6b and Matthew 5:14. How does God want to use believers to have an impact on the world around them? Practically speaking, what does it look like to shine your light into darkness?
“I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.” (NIV)
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” (NIV)
2. This weekend we learned all about a young girl (“Tally”) who was able to make an impact on a military hero. (See 2 Kings 5:1-5.) In your opinion, why do you think God uses ordinary people as part of His extraordinary plans?
3. Read 2 Kings 5:11. What does this passage reveal to us about human nature and the way we want to tell God what to do? Why was it important for Elisha to wait and let Naaman see God at work?
“But Naaman went away angry and said, ‘I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, wave his hand over the spot and cure me of my leprosy.’” (NIV)
4. Jeff taught there are six things we can learn from “Tally” and the way God used her to share her faith with Naaman. Briefly describe each step of what “Tally” did:
Earned trust and respect. Noticed suffering and got to know others. Cared about others. Believed that God is real. Spoke up with courage. Introduced her master to Elisha.
5. We don’t know what Tally’s reservations were about speaking up, but we do know the effect she had on her household. Whom has God used in your past to point you toward Him? Take a few minutes for each group member to give a mini (1-2 sentences) faith story of who God has used in your life.
Even the least of us can be used by God to help others find Him. Who is God calling you to reach? Pray for courage, that your efforts will be able to make a Kingdom impact.
