Week 1: Peace
Jeff Griffin
Romans 5:1
Our new series is a study of some of the greatest benefits found in Jesus. The first of the benefits found in Romans 5 is “Peace”. Specifically, “peace with God.” Because of Christ, we have gone from being enemies to being friends of God.
Jeff kicked off the series by talking about winning a jackpot at a video arcade. Can you think of an arcade game that you used to enjoy playing? If so, tell the group about it.
1. Reread Romans 5:1 Since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God.
This verse is packed with theologically significant terms. If you can, provide definitions for “justified,” “faith,” and “peace.”
2. Reread Philippians 4:7 The peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds.
Explain the difference between “peace with God” and the “peace of God.”
3. Reread Romans 5:9 We have been saved from God’s wrath through Christ!
What is God’s wrath? In what way have we been saved from God’s wrath?
4. Reread Romans 5:10 While we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of Jesus.
What would you say to someone who disagreed with this verse by claiming that they were never enemies of God?
5. Reread Romans 5:11 (NLT) So now we rejoice in our new relationship with God because Christ has made us friends of God.
Why do many of us miss out on much of the rejoicing described in this verse.
6. How could we grow to experience more of the joy associated with finding “peace with God?”
Spend some time thanking God for the unprecedented opportunity of moving from the “dominion of darkness” to the “kingdom of Christ Jesus.”
