Week 5: God Loves

Jeff Griffin

Psalm 23:5-6a

Psalm 23 is one of the most beloved chapters in the Bible. It tells us of God’s nature and His feelings toward us, which, as we see this week, are abounding in goodness.

 Kicking It Off:

What is the most luxurious experience – be it a place, event, or activity – you’ve ever had?

 Discussion:

1.     Let’s review Psalm 23 again. This time see if your group can recite verses 1-4 aloud together.

2.     Have you ever been invited to an event where you were surprised to be included on the guest list? How did that feel?

3.     Read Psalm 23:5-6a. Under what conditions does God prepare a feast here for the psalmist? Would you call that an ideal or “good” setting? Now read Romans 5:8. What does this tell you about God’s eagerness to show His love to us?

"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8, NIV)

4.     God doesn’t wait for ideal circumstances to show us His goodness. Do you ever wait for the “right moment” to bless others? In the next week, what kindness can you show someone as an ambassador of God’s goodness?

5.     When David says, “you prepare a table,” he speaks of God as a divine host. We are the guests. Read Luke 14:16-20. We often equate this with salvation, but consider it in light of Psalm 23:5. List each of the excuses given in the parable. Can you relate to any excuse in how you respond to the feast of goodness that God places in your life?

6.     Review what Jeff said about the next part of verse 5 and what it tells us about God’s goodness (the sacrifice and the enthusiasm). Which of these do you find harder to accept - that by Christ’s sacrifice you “look and smell like Jesus” or that God is thrilled to bless you to overflowing?

7.     Read Psalm 23:6a again. David speaks with certainty here. Have you ever doubted God’s goodness and love in your life? What restored your confidence?

Wrapping Up:

God’s goodness is like Him – above and beyond what we can comprehend. Invite your group to respond to Psalm 23:6a in prayer. Speak the verse back to God.

“Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,” (Psalm 23:6a, NIV)
