Psalm 23 is one of the most beloved chapters in the Bible. As we see this week, a better understanding of this Psalm can enable us to live more directed and more purposeful lives.
On a road trip do you prefer to give the directions (navigator) or follow the directions (driver)?
1. Scripture memory time. Break into pairs and take turns reciting Psalm 23:1-2 from memory.
2. Read Psalm 23:1-3. In each of these verses, who is the one acting? Who is being acted upon?
3. As we consider verse 3 and God’s guiding of us it’s important that we remember the context. What is the very first phrase of this psalm [The Lord is my shepherd]? What does this imply about our relationship with Him? Reread verse 3b, this time inserting “The Lord, my shepherd” for the pronoun “He.” How does that enhance your appreciation of what’s being said?
4. Jeff described the human desire of wanting to be in control – to hold the yoke. Read the first half of Isaiah 53:6. Who does the prophet include in this statement? To what does he liken us? What does it describe as our propensity?
5. As Jeff shared, God is there always ready to guide, but we sheep are not always ready to follow. How does knowing that the paths God chooses for us are always right and best help you to follow Him?
6. What reason is given in Psalm 23:3 for why God guides us? What’s the implication for when we don’t follow? Jesus talked about this very thing in the Sermon on the Mount. Read Matthew 5:14-16. What does this say about the impact of our choices and actions?
In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:16, NIV)
7. Name one thing you’ll do this week to watch for and follow God’s guidance.
Invite everyone to express their gratitude for God as a Shepherd Leader. Pray for your group’s hearts to be impressed with the beauty and significance of God’s plans for them.
