Week 3: Pursue Him Daily

Jeff Griffin

Mark 1:35-38

In a world overflowing with advice, it can be difficult to figure out what matters most. But the foundational principles Jesus used to start His ministry can help us identify exactly what we need to prioritize in our lives. This week, we’re taking a look at how best to pursue Him daily.

Kicking It Off:

Are you more of a morning person or a night person? How can you tell?

Discussion:

1.     Jeff often loves to explore artifacts and archeological history. How does that impact your faith in the ancient teachings of the Bible? What could Peter’s first century house have to teach us?

 2.     Early in Mark chapter 1, we see Jesus busy with everything from teaching in the synagogue to driving out a demonic spirit to healing Peter’s mother-in-law. What kind of comfort do you take in knowing that even the Son of God had a jam-packed (albeit human) to-do list?

 3.     Jeff reminded us it’s important to work hard and carpe diem or “seize the day” with meaningful activities. And yet it can still be hard to strike a balance. What kind of activities keep you and many of us from turning to God on a daily basis (e.g., scrolling, wasting time, etc.)?

 4.     What are some potential advantages to having a morning prayer time? What are some other times of day that you like to pray? What are advantages to that?

“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” ~ Mark 1:35 (NIV)

 5.     Jeff talked about the significance of Jesus getting away and modeling “vacare deo” — making time to be alone with God. As a group, brainstorm strategic ways that you could do this on a more regular basis.

“Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer.” ~ Luke 5:16 (NLT)

 6.     What is your experience with using online Bible study tools like YouVersion or BibleGateway.com? What other tools do you like to use to help you understand and apply God’s Word?

 7.    Based on today’s discussion, what’s one step you’re willing to take to increase your Bible study and prayer time with God?

Wrapping Up:

There is a definite connection between our intentional, regular Bible reading and our long-term spiritual health. Ask the Lord to guide each group member to continue (or at least begin) to pursue God in meaningful ways, each and every day.
