Week 5: Moses - Finding Our Identity in Christ
Jeff Griffin
Hebrews 11:20-29
From music stars to sports legends, a Hall of Fame celebrates heroes who inspire greatness. The Bible even has its own Hall of Fame. In our study of Hebrews 11, we’re learning how spiritual champions of old inspire our faith today. This week’s all about Moses and his spiritual identity.
If you were to choose a chair or memento from a place that was key to your spiritual journey, where would it be? What makes it so special to you?
1. We learned about Moses’ decision to prioritize his Hebrew identity rather than his noble Egyptian identity. Jeff also explained how we all have a tension between our “world identity” versus our “kingdom of God” identity. In what ways do you relate to this struggle?
2. Which Scriptures give you perspective about your identity as a child of God? How do you keep that principle front and center in your life? If this is a new concept for you, what will you commit to doing to keep that in mind and not grow discouraged?
3. Jeff reminds us of several ways that our identity in Christ is more important than the world’s system. Spend a few moments describing and reviewing each of these concepts. Which of these resonates with you the most? Which one is more of a stretch to fully believe?
· Better Belonging (Hebrews 11:24-25)
· Longer Lasting (Hebrews 11:25) than sin
· Greater Honor (Hebrews 11:26)
· Finer Treasure (Hebrews 11:26)
· Firmer Resolve (Hebrews 11:27)
4. Jeff described the idea of serving as a soldier for Christ, fighting for the kingdom of God, whether you’re in full-time ministry or not. What do you think of this role of representing Jesus all around you? How can your group help strengthen your boldness as a courageous defender of the faith?
“He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.” (Hebrews 11:27, NIV)
5. Romans 6:6 describes how as believers in Christ, we are no longer slaves to sin. How can you apply this truth to your life this week? What will be different about you, as a result?
“For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin.” (NIV)
Moses is a key figure in the Scriptures, both in the Old and New Testament. And he shows us the blessings of finding our identity in Christ. Pray for your group members to see yourselves in light of eternity and, in turn, fearlessly change the way you experience life.
