Week 1: Abel - Making Worship Beautiful
Jeff Griffin
Hebrews 11:1-4
From music stars to sports legends, a Hall of Fame celebrates heroes who inspire greatness. Did you know the Bible has its own Hall of Fame? In this study of Hebrews 11, we’ll discover how the spiritual champions of old can inspire our faith today. This week we’re talking about Abel, the first inductee into the biblical Hall of Fame.
If you could meet the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) from any sport and get their autograph, who would you choose? What inspires you about that athlete?
1. If you had a personal faith Hall of Fame for people who’ve been part of your faith journey, who makes the list? Who has been the most instrumental in your initial faith history?
2. Based on what we learned this week, what was the drama happening with Cain and Abel in Genesis 4:2-8? How do you think that jealousy lead to murder? What made Abel’s faith land him in the Hall of Fame?
“While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.” (Genesis 4:8b, NIV)
“It was by faith that Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did. God said he was pleased with the gifts Abel offered and called Abel a good man because of his faith. Abel died, but through his faith he is still speaking.” (Hebrews 11:4, NCV)
3. Read Hebrews 11:1, which Jeff summarized as TRUSTING God and SEEING God. On a practical level, how does this play out for you in everyday life?
“Faith means being sure of the things we hope for and knowing that something is real even if we do not see it.” (NCV)
4. Jeff stated, “We should not be into religion. We should be into relationship. That’s what Abel had.” What do you think are the key differences between the two?
5. When you interact with God, what keeps you from just going through the motions? How can our group help to impact your personal relationship with God and keep it authentic?
According to 1 Corinthians 11:27, how we worship matters. How will what you learned about Abel affect you this week? Pray you’ll approach this sermon series with an open heart.
“So that, whoever eats the bread or drinks the wine without due thought is making himself like one of those who allowed the Lord to be put to death without discerning who he was.” (PHILLIPS)
