Elijah - Facing our Fears

May 19,2024

Week 1: God Cares For Us

Jeff Griffin

1 Kings 17:1-6

Life can be terrifying at times. Storms can press in from every direction. Anxiety often robs us of peace and joy. There once was a man who was overwhelmed by life, and yet he discovered how to face his fear. Where can we find this courage? Join us as we learn from Elijah.

Kicking It Off:

Jeff mentioned how he played some basketball when he was younger. What’s one extracurricular activity or sport that you took part in as a teenager?

Discussion:

1. Share some highlights that you discovered about the prophet Elijah from this week’s message.

(See also Matthew 17:2-3 and James 5:17.)

2. What did we learn was the connection to worshipping a false god and a drought? How could this apply in our spiritual life as well? (See Deuteronomy 11:16-17.)

3. Jeff said that when we discover our heroes are ordinary humans, it gives us hope. Think of a few superheroes in your personal faith journey. What qualities inspire you about their life?

4. Describe the significance of the message that Elijah had to declare to the evil King Ahab, as demonstrated in 1 Kings 17:1. How would you feel if you received the assignment to share this news with the king and his crazy wife?

“Now Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, ‘As the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word.’” (NIV)

5. Sometimes God gives us assignments that make us feel quite uncomfortable. What are some ways God’s provided for you when you followed His lead in the past, even if you felt a little uncertain at times?

6. God, the good coach, often sees leadership potential in us that we don’t see in ourselves. Where do you think God might be calling you to step out in faith in the weeks and months ahead? How can our small group encourage you in taking the initial bold steps of faith?

Wrapping Up:

Let’s trust the Lord to lead us in the delicate balance of stepping out of our comfort zone and utilizing a season of spiritual rest. Ask God to guide each group member in wisdom and discernment, to ultimately take the next step in whatever assignment He has planned.
