Too Good To Be True?

Week 3: Then Why Does God Have Restrictions Regarding Sex?
Jeff Griffin
Genesis 3:1-5
The Bible declares that God’s goodness exceeds our wildest dreams. We’d all love to believe that, but skeptics have a list of reasons it can’t be true. Rather than ignoring a skeptic’s arguments, let’s have honest and courageous conversations about life’s hardest questions. This week, we’re talking about God’s good plans for and guidelines surrounding the gift of sex.
Jeff shared how he and his friend created a little mischief one day when he was younger. What were some silly activities you would try when you were bored as a kid or a teenager?
1. Read Genesis 3:1. How does this passage shed light on Satan’s timeless tactics of tempting humanity?
Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” (NIV)
2. Within our most intimate relationships, there are many ways that Satan wants to make us misunderstand God’s original design. Yet what did you learn about the benefits of God’s plan for sex?
3. Jeff mentioned there are several Old and New Testament passages which outline God’s parameters for sexual relationships, including Hebrews 13:4. Do you think it’s important to examine God’s perspective on this topic? Why or why not? What tends to happen when we ignore God’s instruction in our personal lives?
Marriage must be honored in every respect, with no cheating on the relationship, because God will judge the sexually immoral person and the person who commits adultery. (CEB)
4. Jeff explained how each one of us has certain sexual desires that we need to hold in check. He also said, “The point of life is not sex. The point of life is God.” How could living out this statement positively impact your current and future relationships?
5. Along those lines, how does Romans 1:25 shed light on our human tendency? What can we do to help each other counter our inclinations and weaknesses?
They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen. (NLT)
6. What do these verses from Acts show us about befriending and approaching those who are far from God or living with sexual struggles? How might this passage challenge you this week?
As for Philip, an angel of the Lord said to him, “Go south … The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.” (Acts 8:26a, 29, NIV)
Think about how each of your group members can honor God with their intimate relationships, whether they are married or single. Pray for God to guide you as you live a life that reflects His goodness and demonstrates sexual integrity.
